About C-Capacity C-Capacity is an e-magazine supported by C-Change and prepared by The Communication Initiative in cooperation with C-Change partner Ohio University. It is dedicated to alerting you and your organization to resources, training, links, and other opportunities for capacity strengthening in social and behavior change communication (SBCC), all vetted for quality and relevance by AED and Ohio University. Government of Kenya Launches Efforts to Revitalize Family Planning At current growth rates, Kenya is projected to be one of Africa's most populous countries, surpassing 50 million by 2025. This raises concerns over the negative impact of such growth on health, specifically maternal and infant mortality, education, environment, infrastructure, and water supplies. To address this challenge, C-Change is assisting Kenya’s Division of Reproductive Health (DRH) and partners with the recently launched mass media campaign "Plan for Yourself A Good Life" focused on changing beliefs and behaviors among peri-urban and rural young men and women ages 25-35, and promoting child spacing and informed choice of modern contraceptives. The campaign includes materials in Kiswahili and local languages for radio, print, and outdoor displays in regions across Kenya where the contraceptive prevalence rates are the lowest. 2. C-Change Supports Launch of President's Malaria Initiative in DRC C-Change led public relations efforts and logistics for the official launch of the President's Malaria Initiative (PMI) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). U.S. Global Malaria Coordinator Rear Admiral Timothy Ziemer travelled to Mbuji-Mayi, capital of Kasai East Province, for the kick-off ceremony in mid-November that marked DRC's new status as the PMI's 16th focus country. Rear Adm. Ziemer noted in his remarks that the PMI's goal is to achieve a 50 percent reduction in the country's malaria burden. As he explained, "We will be doing this by targeting those most vulnerable to malaria—children under the age of 5 and pregnant women—and by providing long-lasting insecticide-treated nets and antimalarial drugs and integrating malaria control and prevention activities with other health programs." Director, C-Change Research The C-Change Research Director will oversee monitoring and evaluation (M&E) activities conducted in support of country implementation programs which focus on SBCC in RH/FP, HIV/AIDS and malaria. As key personnel, the Research Director will be responsible: for planning, coordinating, and directing applied research and knowledge generation activities; for leading a team of research staff, principal investigators, research consultants, and regional research partners; and for reviewing and advising on research design, implementation, analysis, report preparation, and the development of peer reviewed articles for journal submission, based on the outcome of C-Change research and M&E activities. In addition, in collaboration with the Deputy Director, s/he will develop research training activities to attract, develop, and retain research professionals at institutions in developing countries and emerging economies, worldwide. Worth Reading 4. Strategic Communication for Development Projects: A Toolkit for Task Team Leaders This toolkit is part of the World Bank's Distance Learning Course on strategic communication. Through the use of behavior change communication strategies, the toolkit is designed to help World Bank managers plan and supervise the implementation of communication activities in population, health, and nutrition (PHN) projects. The tool kit contains: communication research approaches for World Bank projects; a guide to communication indicators; sample terms of reference for bank and borrower consultants; guiding questions for assessing organizational capacity; a sample budget and implementation plan; and case studies of practices in behavior change communication. South Asian Public Health Forum SAPHF was established in 1999 to improve communication among public health professionals who have interest in South Asia (Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, and Maldives). Over the years its membership has increased to several hundreds of professionals from all corners of the world. 6. World Family Doctors Caring for People (Wonca) - Behaviour Change Listserve This list is for discussing how to change organizational, practitioner and patient behavior with the goal of promoting healthy habits and self-care of chronic diseases. 7. Health Research for Development (HR4D-net) HR4D-net is a global email discussion group dedicated to promoting health research to improve the health of people in developing countries. Select Core Resources: Program Implementation Below you will find a selection of core resources and trainings designed to strengthen capacity for implementing a successful SBCC program. 8. Select Publications from the International HIV/AIDS Alliance The Alliance and its partners have published over 300 resources designed to enable non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and community-based organizations (CBOs) in developing countries to respond to the challenges of HIV and AIDS in their communities including training manuals, policy briefings, good practice guides, and CD-ROMs. All resources can be downloaded. Below is a short list which C-Capacity feels are particularly useful for program implementation capacity building: 9. A Toolkit for Developing Integrated Campaigns to Encourage the Distribution and Use of Long Lasting Insecticide-treated Nets (LLINs) This toolkit from The Alliance for Malaria Prevention contains seven key chapters that take organizations through the process of planning and implementing rapid scale-up campaigns to encourage universal use of LLINs. It covers planning; coordination; budgets and fundraising; logistics; communication; the technical aspects of campaigning; and sustaining campaign results. It also includes examples of chronograms, a sample timeline, and a list of resources. The toolkit comes with a CD-ROM containing the documents referenced in the resource list. 10. Moments in Time: HIV/AIDS Advocacy Stories Published by The Policy Project, this advocacy manual provides 16 in-depth interviews from HIV/AIDS advocates around the world. The collection of stories is intended to be a resource for advocacy training, reflective learning, and strategic planning. The manual shares some of the HIV/AIDS global advocacy efforts over the past 30 years, focusing on women, people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA), and faith-based organizations. These groups were chosen because of a perceived need on the part of the publishers to promote the involvement of those most affected by HIV/AIDS at all levels of decision making. 11. Human-Centered Design Toolkit From C-Change partner IDEO, this toolkit explains the Human-Centered Design (HCD) process, offering techniques, methods, tips, and worksheets to guide the user through HCD in order to give "voice to communities and...[allow] their desires to guide the creation and implementation of solutions." Aimed at NGOs and social enterprises working in communities in Africa, Asia, and Latin Amercia, the process uses the lenses of desirability, feasibility, and viability in a three-phase process: hear, create, and deliver. The toolkit provides reviews of best practices, four scenarios of use, and includes sections on each phase of the process with case studies and facilitator notes. From The Health Communication Unit (THCU) at Toronto University, this workbook uses a four-step approach to assist health promotion practitioners in the development of program logic models. As stated in the workbook: "A logic model is a diagrammatic representation of a program.... A logic model provides a graphic depiction of the relationship between the main strategies of a program and associated goals, objectives, population(s) of interest, indicators and resources..... Logic models are a useful way of helping stakeholders understand the overall structure and function of a program (i.e., the "big picture"). As such, logic models are a useful resource for program planning and evaluation." 13. The Health Communicator's Social Media Toolkit This document introduces social media, lists the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)'s “lessons learned” on the use of social media in health campaigning and describes how to develop a social media strategy. It describes the use of the following tools: 14. HIV/AIDS Behaviour Change Communication: A Toolkit for the Workplace The International Labour Organization (ILO) in collaboration with Family Health International (FHI) developed this toolkit which provides a step-by-step approach, emphasizing prevention through education, gender awareness and practical support for behavior change. Its intended users are government authorities, employers and workers and their organizations, businesses, ILO/AIDS National Project Coordinators, national BCC consultants and collaborating NGOs. It is designed for those with little or no experience in communications planning. As explained in the introduction, it is divided into several pull-out booklets that can be used either separately to learn more about different elements of BCC, or jointly to design and implement a comprehensive BCC programme at the workplace. Select Opportunities 15. Environmental Communication for Behavior Change This course provides environmental professionals with a practical introduction to the strategies, methods, and tools of environmental communication that effectively lead to changes in behavior. The field-based skills gained through this course aim to benefit all practicing environmental professionals faced with the challenge of changing behaviors. 16. REPSSI Tools - Tree of Life The tree of life is a narrative approach to counseling that allows for conversations with children that help them build resilience through sharing stories of hope and building connections to those around them. This three-day workshop is primarily intended for child and youth care workers, programme staff, and trainers. The course Introduction to Psychosocial Support Counseling (PSS) - also offered by REPSSI - is a prerequisite to enroll in this workshop. 17. Master of HIV Programme and Short Courses in HIV/AIDS This training is carried out as a 1-year masters program at the University of Copenhagen. Students will receive training in: HIV epidemiology, HIV and AIDS prevention, sexual and reproductive health and rights, HIV/AIDS treatment and care, health systems, health policy, and HIV/AIDS programming. The focus of the Masters is on HIV and AIDS in an international perspective, and the course program is for all with a clinical, public health, or organizational management interest in HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, and care. 18. Health Communications Internship Program (HCIP) The National Cancer Institute (NCI), one of the member Institutes of the National Institutes of Health, is recruiting candidates for a paid internship programme that offers mentoring to undergraduate and graduate students in health communications research, monitoring and evaluation, campaign design and development, advocacy, media relations, planning and implementation of programmes, health disparity reduction, and science writing (translating scientific material for a lay audience). Interns will be assigned to a host office for the duration of their internship. All placements are located in Maryland (suburban Washington, DC, United States). There are two application periods each year: Deadline for Spring Term, 1st Tuesday in September; Deadline for Fall Term, 1st Tuesday in March. The UNESCO Fellowships Programme, through the award and administration of fellowships, study, and travel grants, aims to: 20. Global Health Fellows Program This program offers paid internships for summer 2011 with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in the Agency's Washington, DC headquarters and USAID/Uganda-sponsored internships in Kampala with Mission partner organizations. These internships will provide an opportunity to work with experienced professionals and to gain practical experience in the field of global health. Deadline for applications is February 4 2011.
