Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

The Station Television Series - Egypt

The Station is a 30-episode edutainment television series produced in 2007 by Common Ground Productions and Video Cairo Sat. The series is designed to focus audience attention on societal problems and to shed light on the important role of the media - both in exposing negative societal elements and in contributing to solutions in Egypt.
Communication Strategies

Written and produced by Egyptians, the series is designed to help viewers from all strata of Egyptian society to understand their differences while searching for their common bonds. The series is told from the perspective of journalists and producers who work in a fictional Cairo television news station. Based on the premise that television is a powerful instrument for social change, the journalists report on current problems through the perspectives of their own diverse economic, social, religious, and gender identities, while struggling to create impartial and trustworthy news programmes that serve the whole of Egypt. According to the producers, the characters are designed to serve as role models for viewers, as their struggle to work together and understand one another is symbolic of the need for Egyptians from all groups to come together.

The themes in each episode focus on what the producers have identified as important issues facing Egypt today, which include youth unemployment, corruption, democratisation, and privatisation. The goal is to provide Egyptian audiences with a vision of a better future and to give viewers practical tools and strategies to achieve that vision.

The project also produced a song promoting reconciliation which accompanies the drama series. Click here to watch the music video of the Peace Song on YouTube.

Key Points

The series is modelled after a highly successful programme of the same name co-produced and aired by Common Ground Productions in Nigeria. According to the producers, The Station is the first Egyptian television series to combine the soap opera format when dealing with controversial social issues.

Common Ground Productions (CGP) is the media arm of Search for Common Ground. Using television, radio, and internet programming, CGP works to transform the way individuals and societies deal with conflict: away from adversarial approaches and towards cooperative solutions.
