Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Location

Johannesburg, South Africa

According to Institute for the Advancement of Journalism (IAJ), South Africa’s information and communication technology (ICT) landscape is shifting, changing, and becoming more complex. The roles of the Department of Communications, the Regulator, and Parliament are under review. The Department of Communications is launching a major new ICT policy review process in 2013 with a view to creating new policy and laws for a converged broadcasting, internet, and telecommunications environment. This course organised by (IAJ) seeks to explore the present media landscape, its history, the key players, who owns who and future scenarios.

By the end of the course, trainees will have an understanding of:

  • the history of the media and ICT landscape;
  • the roles of the Regulator, Parliament, the Ministry and Department of Communications;
  • key ICT legislation governing the sector and an understanding of the rationale behind government's ICT policy review process;
  • who is who in the sector and who owns who including cross-media ownership; and
  • the major implications of convergence and digital migration.
