Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText

This toolkit from amfAR was developed to assist community-based organisations (CBOs) that provide HIV-related programmes and services for gay and bisexual men, other men who have sex with men (MSM), and transgender individuals. The guide offers information about who is funding MSM/lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) groups, snapshots of what those grant programmes look like, strategies for approaching funders, and what projects those grantmakers have supported in the past.

This toolkit is intended to go beyond traditional funders, such as private foundations, to offer information and ideas about other organisations that provide funding to, or partner with, MSM/LGBT groups. Finally, the guide offers general tips on fundraising, from networking to proposal writing, and includes templates to help organisations and activists get started.

The guide intends to answer a number of questions, including:

  • "Which donors are funding MSM and other lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community-based organizations?
  • Which donors are funding projects in particular geographic areas?
  • What kinds of grants are these donors making?
  • What kinds of programs and projects are being funded by these grants?
  • Whom do I contact and how does my organization apply for funding?"
