Freedom House Southern Africa Small Grants
Under the Justice as a Right in Southern Africa Programme, Freedom House Southern Africa (FHSA) is calling for proposals for small grants to civil society organisations to promote judicial independence, respect for the rule of law, and protection of human rights. Although the programme currently works mostly at a regional level, this call seeks proposals for activities at a national level in the following countries: Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, South Africa, Swaziland, and Zambia.
Proposals should focus on activities that can include, but are not limited to, the following:
- research into topics related to the objectives of this call for proposals;
- training for judges, lawyers, other members of the legal profession or civil society;
- monitoring, documentation, and reporting of human rights abuses;
- promotion of the use of strategic or public interest litigation;
- advocacy and public education campaigns on topics linked to judicial independence, the rule of law, and protection of human rights;
- promotion of relevant policy reforms;
- support to civil society participation in constitutional review processes;
- community-based civic education or consultations; and
- conferences or seminars on topics related to the objectives of this call for proposals.
The maximum amount an organisation may request under this call for proposals is US$35,000 and the minimum is US$20,000. Co-financing of projects by the applicant organisation is encouraged. The minimum duration of projects to be proposed should be three months and the maximum duration should be nine months.

In order to be eligible to apply for this call for proposals, applicants must:
- be nationals of Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, South Africa, Swaziland or Zambia;
- be a legally registered NGOs (this category includes law societies or bar associations);
- be a not-for-profit entity;
- have a track record of working on rule of law and human rights programmes;
- have adequate financial management systems and human resources in place;
- not be bankrupt;
- not have been convicted or currently the subject of any legal proceedings related to the management of funds; and
- not be a political party or a politically affiliated organisation.
