Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Farmers' Rights Resource Pages for Decision-Makers and Practitioners

SummaryText
This website is a resource for Farmers' Rights (FR) as they are addressed in the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture. FR are about enabling farmers to continue their work as stewards and innovators of agricultural biodiversity and about recognising and rewarding them for their contribution to the global pool of genetic resources. According to the website, FR are critical to ensuring the conservation and sustainable use of genetic resources for food and agriculture and, consequently, for food security. FR are also a means to fight against rural poverty in developing countries. This website has been developed as a tool for decision-makers, practitioners, and others involved in the realisation of FR. It is also intended as an information source for researchers and others interested in farming and advocacy.

The website includes history, legal status, and contents of FR; the state of implementation of these rights; and a database on legislation and policies. Also included are concrete recommendations on how to go about implementing FR, including a freely available workshop module and success stories from all over the world. The prospects for implementing FR internationally are also discussed. Overviews of literature and organisations related to FR, a calendar of coming events, and answers to 'frequently asked questions' (FAQ) are included. This website is from the Farmers' Rights Project of the Fridtjof Nansen Institute (FNI), created with the support of the sectoral Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) project People, Food, and Biodiversity, which is implemented on behalf of the German Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ).
