Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Theory & Practice of Online Learning

SummaryText
"Theory & Practice of Online Learning" is a 450-page book concerned with assisting providers of online education with useful tools to carry out the teaching and learning transactions online. It presents the theory and the necessary administration, tools, and methods of designing and delivering learning online.

Most of the authors are from Athabasca University and share their experiences of developing online learning within that open university.

"Starting with a summary of relevant educational theory, the book visits the great dichotomies that have marked the history of open and distance learning. How should we balance the social and individual aspects of study? What is the right mixture between independent and interactive learning? Should courses be paced for cohorts of students, or unpaced for the benefit of individuals?" Succeeding chapters provide guidance on important aspects of online learning practice, such as copyright, multimedia editing, supporting asynchronous discussion, library support, and quality assurance.
