Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText

These guidelines are intended to facilitate a good understanding of the Village Health Team (VHT) strategy.  They are the official guide given to individuals and organisations that plan to, or are implementing, community-based health activities in Uganda. All health activities and interventions, for example, malaria prevention or reproductive healthcare, must be coordinated through the VHT structure. The document incorporates lessons learned during the nine years since the first "Strategy and Plan" was published in September 2001. The updates were realised with significant consultation with stakeholders and partners.

The guidelines contain background information, a justification for the VHT strategy, and:

  • Criteria for selection of VHT;
  • Qualities of a VHT member;
  • Composition of the VHT;
  • Objectives of the VHT;
  • Roles and responsibilities of the VHT.

Guiding Principles for VHT strategy:

  • Community ownership of VHT strategy;
  • Equity and access;
  • Community Support.

Implementation Strategy:

  • Advocacy, social mobilisation and communication;
  • Networking and partnerships;
  • Capacity building;
  • Resource mobilisation.

VHT Coordination:

  • National level;
  • District level.
