Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Participatory Video For Change: Promoting Women's Rights in Southern Africa - Video

This video shows the 3-stage capacity building in participatory video facilitation process undertaken by partner organisations of Oxfam Canada based in southern Africa. The entire training programme took place over nine months and was delivered by InsightShare - a United Kingdom (UK)-based organisation specialising in participatory video.
Participatory video is a set of techniques to involve a group or a community in shaping and creating their own film. The process aims to make basic film-making easy and accessible, and it encourages participants to explore issues, voice concerns, or simply be creative and tell stories.
In 2010, 3 partner organisations of Oxfam Canada, working on issues of gender-based violence in Southern Africa, were invited to take part in a capacity-building programme to train staff and direct beneficiaries in participatory video facilitation methods. Over 3 stages, spanning almost 1 year, the trainees acquired the knowledge and skills necessary to deliver high-quality participatory video projects and practiced their skills within short community post-training assignments in their own communities and their organisations' service users.
