Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

One World Student Media Programme

In 2009, the United Kingdom (UK)-based organisation One World Media launched a 3-year project to encourage and inspire documentary filmmaking and journalism students to produce high-quality media coverage of the developing world. Funded by the UK's Department for International Development (DFID), the media development initiative centres around a range of university media courses around the UK, as well as other activities.
Communication Strategies

One World Media is working with students in accredited media and journalism courses in the UK. In collaboration with their tutors, organisers will develop curricula and course content covering a range of issues relating to reporting and filmmaking in a developing country, such as ethical challenges when reporting on the ground. Experienced filmmakers and journalists are facilitating the workshop sessions at participating universities, which will be interspersed with screenings of documentary films about the developing world, accompanied by question and answer (Q & A) sessions and master classes with those involved in producing them. Students will be eligible to apply for modest funding to help them make a piece of media in a developing country.

The project will produce a range of materials for university tutors and students, making them available on the One World Media website.

In 2012, the final year of the project, there will be a media festival featuring seminars, panel discussions, and celebration of the media produced as part of the project.
