Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

A Guide to Effective Environmental Education and Communication
SummaryText

This booklet summarises the lessons learned from eight years of experience in over thirty countries by the Environmental Education and Communication (EE&C) Project, which was also known as GreenCOM. This resource intends to provide environmental protection and natural resource managers, planners, and decision makers with insight on how EE&C can help them achieve their goals and objectives. It is written from gleanings of lessons learned from behaviour change programmes in public health, education, and agricultural technology transfer used to help governments, communities, and individuals develop sustainable environmental solutions in their countries, towns, and homes.

It explains EE&C and uses 18 lessons learned to illustrate the following:

  • What Has GreenCOM Learned? Elements of Success
  • Assess: Don’t Assume…Assess!
  • Plan and Design: Use the Assessment As Your Guide
  • Pretest and Revise: Prevent Costly Mistakes
  • Implement: Let It Roll!
  • Monitor and Evaluate: Is It Working?
