Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Haba na Haba Radio Programme

Haba na Haba (Little by Little) is a weekly radio programme designed to facilitate dialogue between ordinary people and their leaders. Launched in 2009, the 30-minute programme is a collaboration between the BBC World Service, BBC Media Action, and Radio Free Africa (RFA) and features contributions from reporters at community radio stations across Tanzania, as well as from listeners.

Communication Strategies

The radio talk show is intended to enable faster dialogue between people and government by finding out what issues matter most to local communities and getting those issues discussed on air. Along with raising issues such as water and food scarcity, unemployment and poverty, roads, electricity, corruption, education and health, the programme highlights progress that is being made, and covers success stories on improved government services from around the country. Haba na Haba is broadcast by BBC Swahili and simultaneously rebroadcast by RFA's network of 29 frequencies across the country.

As part of the push to represent Tanzanians from all over the country, the Haba na Haba programmes feature packages produced by six local community-based radio stations: Nuru in Iringa; FADECO in Karagwe; Pangani FM in Pangani; Jogoo in Songea; Orkonerei in Manyara, and Hits in Zanzibar. These packages investigate local problems and discover what community leaders are doing to resolve them. Haba na Haba also invites politicians and public figures to the studio to address the concerns raised in the programme.

Haba na Haba is part of BBC's A National Conversation project, designed to build journalists' skills and create programmes that encourage audience participation. The goal of the project is to strengthen the national media and boost programme making.
