Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Global Conversation on the Post-2015 Sustainable Development Agenda - Video

This video explains the origin of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in the year 2000 and the ways in which people are interacting to share opinions on the next set of post-2015 goals as the deadline for the first set, the MDGs, approaches. "United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon calls the engagement of more than 750,000 people from 193 countries in setting a new global development agenda 'a historic effort for a historic policy-making process.' To ensure a comprehensive and inclusive consultative process, the United Nations launched ...national and thematic dialogues, complemented by a global crowdsourcing effort using digital media and mobile phone technology as well as paper ballots, that have enabled more than 750,000 people from 194 countries so far to take part in setting the next generation of anti-poverty goals."

For example, Clarisse Iribagiza of HeHe Limited has created a system for 20,000 girls to send text messages about their opinions on the post-2015 agenda. Eighty-seven countries have held town-hall-style meetings to discuss the agenda.
