Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

COVID-19 Hygiene Hub

SummaryText

Maintaining good hygiene is an important strategy for fighting the spread of COVID-19. The COVID-19 Hygiene Hub is a free service that supports actors in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) to rapidly design evidence-based hygiene interventions, such as behaviour change communication (BCC) initiatives, to combat the coronavirus. The platform has 3 principal functions:

  • to connect institutions and organisations implementing hygiene programmes in response to COVID-19 with technical advisors who can answer questions and provide detailed advice in real time;
  • to provide access to a searchable set of resources that summarise current evidence and guidelines and make practical recommendations for crisis-affected or LMIC settings; and
  • to offer a platform for sharing - through an interactive forum and a tool for spreading the word about projects - what is working among governments, international organisations, and civil society actors.

The COVID-19 Hygiene Hub emerges from a broad partnership housed at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) that draws on scientific, operational, and creative expertise from a network of organisations. The initiative was developed by individuals from LSHTM, the Centre for Affordable Water and Sanitation Technology (CAWST), and the Wash'Em team.
