Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

AUSTCARE - Australia

AUSTCARE was formed in 1967 to mobilise support for international refugees and displaced persons, including those affected by natural disasters, by "assisting them to meet their basic needs and build better lives."
Communication Strategies

Projects involve communities in planning, implementation and monitoring. "Full community involvement is essential for positive long-term development and sustainability." AUSTCARE has prioritised projects that focus on health and education (including vocational training) along with responding to emergencies where possible. They work to raise awareness and increase understanding of issues relating to refugees, displaced persons, aid and development through advocacy, development education and other relevant programmes. The AUSTCARE website endeavours to provide comprehensive information about the people they serve, the countries they work in, the type of projects they fund, and the various issues that affect those they strive to assist.
Development Issues

Rights, Economic Development, Refugees.
Key Points

Their first priority is to work with local non-government organisations (NGOs). An important part of the work is to help these organisations develop skills so that when AUSTCARE's involvement ends, they are able to continue running their projects and establish new ones. Sometimes AUSTCARE works in partnership with international NGOs. This is done when the NGO has expertise and infrastructure that would enable AUSTCARE to work most effectively and efficiently. Often this is the case in emergency situations when an international NGO may be able to respond more quickly than a local NGO (which may have suffered in the emergency situation). AUSTCARE raises funds via public appeals, community education, legacies, bequests and grants. During the 1999/2000 financial year, AUSTCARE's turnover was over 3 million dollars.
Partners

Accredited by AusAID. AUSTCARE works in partnership with a variety of organisations overseas who run projects on their behalf.
