Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

The 2014 Audience Engagement Grant Program

"Through this grant we acknowledge how an individual's actions and reach are strengthened through collaboration."

Positioned at the cross-section of international human rights, activism, media, and the arts, the Open Society Documentary Photography Project is extending a call to documentary photographers, photo-based artists, and socially engaged practitioners around the world who strive to go beyond documenting a human rights or social justice issue to enacting change. Since the programme's inception in 2004, 54 photographers have been funded.

In 2014, there will be 2 tracks of support for individuals at different phases of their Audience Engagement projects:

  1. Track One: Project Development: Grantees will receive funding to attend an Open Society-organised retreat in New York, NY, United States (US) in early December 2014. This event will be designed in collaboration with Creative Capital's Professional Development Program, whose workshops provide participants with practical tools and strategies to help them move their project and career goals forward. Attendees will become part of a larger Audience Engagement Grant cohort, with opportunities to connect both during the conference and after. Click here to download the complete Track One guidelines [PDF format].
  2. Track Two: Project Implementation: This is a year-long funding relationship and learning exchange. In addition to funding to attend the December retreat, grantees will receive funding to execute (or continue executing) their projects. Each year, 4 to 5 grants of up to US$30,000 are awarded. Click here to download the complete Track One guidelines [PDF format].
